Eccentric Types
The project revisits design methods of the city block in Barcelona by researching existing city fabric and developing a new form for the urban landscape. Since circulation is a curial point for the city, instead of keeping the conventional courtyard and pushing the building to the edge of the block, this project uses the strategy of folding to aggregate and accumulate, creating internal pathways for the residence’s experience. The extension of one gathering unit starts growing into a small complex, and two small complexes start squishing the space to create a semi-open recreational area.
Furniture and aperture are arranged also by aligning the grid, which fastens and rationalize the curvature of the building massing. After testifying the existing space could be designed through this method, the logic of folding also contributed to the connection between units. Circulation runs through the block and the folded dripping shape which attaches to almost every unit becomes the balcony, unifying the spatial language from plan and elevation.
